Abstract: Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a transformative tool in scientific discovery, playing a crucial role in accelerating research across various fields. In materials science, it has shown the potential to significantly augment traditional methods by providing insights that might have been unattainable using conventional approaches alone. However, the success of machine learning models in materials science is highly dependent on the availability and quality of data. Collecting high-quality datasets remains a major challenge, especially in materials science, where experimental data is often sparse and buried in the unstructured language of scientific literature. AI offers promising solutions for automating data extraction from these vast text resources. Beyond data extraction, it is also being applied to predict material properties, optimize experimental design, and accelerate the discovery of new materials. In this seminar, I will elaborate on how I am integrating AI to address the challenges of data mining from scientific literature. I will also discuss broader AI applications through specific examples, showcasing how AI is reshaping the landscape of materials science.

 Bio: Aleyna Beste Ozhan is a PhD student in the Olivetti Group at MIT, where her research focuses on integrating artificial intelligence with materials science to accelerate discovery and innovation in materials research. She also serves as a graduate student representative in the department and is a member of New England Graduate Women in Science & Engineering, advocating for gender equity in STEM fields. She graduated from Galatasaray High School in 2017 and obtained a double major in Materials Science and Nano Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering from Sabancı University in 2022. During her time at Sabancı, she was a member of Dr. Özge Akbulut’s research group, where her work focused on developing novel, sustainable methods for green body consolidation and machining of advanced ceramics, leveraging colloidal science and ceramics processing. Before starting her graduate studies, she worked on the Ceramics 4.0 initiative, a research project supported by the European Factory Platform, hosted by Sabancı University, and collaborated on a joint project with PCL Ceramics and the University of Manchester, supported by TFI Network+.
