Research in Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition areas aim to understand the content in a given image, video or signal. To give some examples, the task can be recognizing or verifying the face of a person in biometric applications; recognizing objects as needed in various AI systems (e.g. factory automation or autonomous cars); or detecting cancer or other patterns in medical images.
The computer vision systems developed in our group have received first place in several international signature verification and plant identification competitions; and our COVID-19 detection system is in use at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Hospital system.
Remote sensing has been enjoying the continuous attention of the digital image processing and computer vision community since its early days, as it possesses several application areas, including: geological and mineral exploration, agriculture and forestry, as well as environmental monitoring among others.
Its significance for contemporary societies is in fact now more than ever, as humanity’s environmental impact is leading to changes at global scale that require constant monitoring. Computer vision problems encountered in remote sensing include:
