Title: Answer Set Programming and HEX for Robotics Planning and Natural Language Understanding

Speaker: Dr. Peter Schüller

Date/Time: Oct 21, 2015 - 12:40

Place: FENS G032

Abstract: Answer Set Programming is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence where we describe knowledge about the world and what we want to know how to perform reasoning. I will present basic notions of Answer Set Programming and give an overview of two applications: parsing of natural language and interpreting natural language. Moreover we will see an extension of Answer Set Programming: the HEX language, which allows to combine logical rules with other computations. As example application of HEX I will show robotics planning (research done at Sabanci University).

Short Bio: Peter Schüller obtained his doctoral degree in Computer Science from Vienna University of Technology in 2012 under the supervision of Thomas Eiter. His thesis is about the theoretical formulation and efficient realization of Inconsistency Management for distributed knowledge-based systems. He also performed basic research on Answer Set Programming, in particular the HEX formalism. After one year of postdoctoral research in the Cognitive Robotics Lab at Sabanci University, Peter Schüller was appointed as an Assistant Professor at Marmara University, Computer Engineering Department, in 2014. He has published in various international venues and is co-organizing international workshops and conferences.
